August 2010: Wi-Fire Extender PDF Print E-mail

The Wi-Fire is a compact, range-extending USB device that enables you to access a wireless Internet connection from up to 1,000 feet away–three times the range of your internal wireless adapter.  The Wi-Fire uses a powerful directional antenna, highly sensitive receiver and proprietary software to find and enhance normal WiFi signals. With it, you can connect wirelessly to the Internet–even at low signal strengths–faster, more reliably and with a more consistently strong connection–than you are able to with an internal wireless adapter.

The Wi-Fire draws very little power from your laptop battery. It comes complete with everything you need to connect wirelessly to the Internet. Just install the Wi-Fire Connection Manager, plug the Wi-Fire into an available USB port and you’re ready to start. It can rest on any flat surface, laptop display or flat screen monitor.

I tested the device here at AIM Institute.  Without Wi-Fire, I am able to see 3 available wireless networks.  After installing the free applet and connecting Wi-Fire via USB, there are 13 access points available.

This item could be very handy in a large home to extend the usefulness of your home network.  There are many business applications as well! Best of all, Wi-Fire is extending a special discount to members of our computer user group.  GNMUG members can get 20% off the $49 retail value through August by visiting our store, https://store.hfield.com, and ordering a Wi-Fire with the Coupon Code AAPLG200.  Feel free to share the coupon code with other members so nobody misses out on the opportunity.

PDA Net:  Tether your iPhone/DROID to your Mac!

A new software application was released recently that allows DROID and iPhone owners to use their cell phone as a data modem for their laptop.  This means that literally anywhere that you have cell phone service, you can connect your phone to your laptop and you can access the internet.  Many cell phone providers are getting into this business themselves by charging you, so proceed with caution and be sure that you have an UNLIMITED data plan or you may get a nasty nasty surprise in your monthly bill.  The new app is called PdaNet and it provides you with FULL Internet access so all your email, instant message programs will work without any settings changes. It supports both USB Tether and Bluetooth DUN.

PdaNet does NOT require root access or hacking your phone’s firmware in order to work. It is just a regular Android application that works on all Android phones as-is. Tethering is fast, secure and USB mode will also charge your phone at the same time. Your phone can either connect to 3G data, WiFi, or even through VPN and PdaNet will share the connection with your computer.  To tether a DROID phone to a Mac, here’s what you need to do:

Download PDANet to your phone ( from the Market app) as well as PDANet for Mac on your Mac.  Note: if you are upgrading, please run ~/PdaNetUninstall.sh in your home directory and reboot first; also make sure you have the SAME VERSION of PdaNet on the phone side. The current version supports Mac OS X 10.5 or above (32 bit Leopard/Snow Leopard), also it does not work on older hardwares like the PowerBook or iMac. Here are the setup instructions:

1. Download and run the installer on Mac. At the end of the installation you will be asked to reboot your Mac. After rebooting you should see the PdaNet icon on the menu bar. (figure 1)

2. During installation PdaNet will add an ethernet interface (“en2″ in most cases) to your network list. If the network preferences window pops up, just selected “Apply” with the default DHCP settings. If it doesn’t, please bring up network perferences manually to make sure it uses DHCP. (figure 2)

3. Now setup on the phone side. First make sure you have installed PdaNet from Android Market. Launch it and enable USB Tether.

4. On your phone go to Settings->Applications->Development and check “USB Debugging”. (figure 3)

5. Now when you connect your phone to the computer, you should see the menu icon changes state, click on it to connect. When the icon stops blicking and turns blue, your computer should be online.

Network traffics on the Mac will go through PdaNet only if your system does not have other connectivities, so you will need to turn off Airport Wireless and select PDA Net icon in toolbar.  When the icon stops flashing and has a blue steady glow, you’re connected!  Launch browser and enjoy the show!

If VPN access is needed, go into phone Settings>Wireless>VPN and setup the VPN connection according to your VPN configuration (ask your IT Dept).  It’s important to understand here that your PHONE is what is accomplishing the VPN connection rather than your laptop.  Please also note that https only functions for limited time in trial version.  If you want unlimited https service, you will need to purchase the full PDANet app for $29.

Bump

The new iPhone app, called “Bump,” transfers data from one iPhone to another (or an iPod Touch) simply by bumping each other. While one person holds an iPhone, he “bumps” hands with another user holding her iPhone. Then detailed contact information or just select data, such as a phone number, is shared.

The company says information is exchanged in less than 10 seconds. Take a look at how it works:

iTunes DJ

iTunes 8.1 introduces a new spin on the venerable Party Shuffle feature. Now renamed “iTunes DJ” this feature behaves in much the same way as the original Party Shuffle feature but adds one significant twist: Anybody on your network with an iPhone or iPod touch and Apple’s Remote application can now see information about the current playing queue, request songs, and even vote on upcoming songs in the queue. Songs with more votes are pushed up in the queue over songs with fewer votes.

iTunes DJ expands upon the older Party Shuffle system by adding an optional voting feature to help prioritize the order in which items are played when using iTunes DJ in a party setting. This option is off by default, but can be enabled from the iTunes DJ settings screen.

With voting enabled, items added to the DJ queue are automatically given a vote rating and prioritized by the number of votes, rather than simply being dropped at the bottom. Items with more votes play sooner than items with fewer votes. Attempting to re-add the same item to the queue simply increases its number of votes, possibly moving it further up in the queue. The total number of votes for each item is shown in a “Votes” column in the iTunes DJ queue listing.

Guest mode on the Remote will only appear if the Remote app has not already been associated with your iTunes library. From your own device, you simply access and control your iTunes library normally. However the new Remote app provides the iTunes DJ option within your playlists to provide you with more direct control over the iTunes DJ queue. From here you can not only view the queue and the number of votes, but also begin playing a specific song immediately or queue it up to play next.
